Chapter 1

Vis. 3.1.1–2

Translation

Brothers and sisters, the vision I saw was as follows. I had fasted often and pleaded with the Lord to make known to me the revelation he had promised to show me through [that] elderly woman. That very night she appeared to me and said, “Since you are so insistent and eager to know everything, come to the field where you grind grain. At about the fifth hour I will appear to you and show you what you need to see.”

Vis. 3.1.3

Greek source

ἠρώτησα αὐτὴν λέγων· Κυρία, εἰς ποῖον τόπον τοῦ ἀγροῦ; Ὅπου, φησίν, θέλεις. ἐξελεξάμην τόπον καλὸν ἀνακεχωρηκότα. πρὶν δὲ λαλῆσαι αὐτῇ καὶ εἰπεῖν τὸν τόπον, λέγει μοι· Ἥξω ἐκεῖ ὅπου θέλεις.

Translation

I asked her, “Lady, which part of the field?” “Wherever you wish,” she said. I chose a pleasant, secluded spot. Before I could speak to her and name it, she said, “I will come to the place you wish.”

Vis. 3.1.4

Translation

So, brothers and sisters, I went to the field, kept track of the hours, and came to the place where I had arranged for her to come. I saw an ivory bench standing there, with a linen cushion on it and a fine linen cloth spread over it.

Vis. 3.1.5

Translation

When I saw these things there, with no one in the place, I was astonished. A trembling came over me, my hair stood on end, and I shuddered at being alone. Then I came to myself, remembered God's glory, and took courage. I knelt down and once again confessed my sins to the Lord, as before.

Vis. 3.1.6

Translation

She came with six young men whom I had seen before. She stood beside me and listened as I prayed and confessed my sins to the Lord. She touched me and said, “Hermas, stop making all your requests about your sins. Ask about righteousness too, so that you may receive a share of it for your household.”

Vis. 3.1.7

Greek source

καὶ ἐξεγείρει με τῆς χειρὸς καὶ ἄγει με πρὸς τὸ συμψέλιον, καὶ λέγει τοῖς νεανίσκοις· Ὑπάγετε καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε.

Translation

She took my hand, raised me, and led me to the bench. She said to the young men, “Go and build.”

Vis. 3.1.8

Greek source

καὶ μετὰ τὸ ἀναχωρῆσαι τοὺς νεανίσκους καὶ μόνων ἡμῶν γεγονότων λέγει μοι· Κάθισον ὧδε. λέγω αὐτῇ· Κυρία, ἄφες τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους πρῶτον καθίσαι.

Translation

After the young men had left and we were alone, she said to me, “Sit here.” I said, “Lady, let the elders sit first.”

Vis. 3.1.9

Translation

“Do as I tell you,” she said. “Sit.” I wanted to sit on the right, but she would not let me. Instead, she motioned with her hand for me to sit on the left. As I thought about this, unhappy that she had not let me sit on the right, she said, “Are you unhappy, Hermas? The place on the right belongs to others, those who have already pleased God and suffered for the name. You still lack much before you can sit with them. But continue in your simplicity as you have been doing, and you will sit with them, as will all who do their deeds and endure what they endured.”

Chapter 2

Vis. 3.2.1

Translation

“What did they endure?” I asked. “Listen,” she said. “Whippings, imprisonment, great distress, crosses, wild beasts, for the sake of the name. That is why the right side of the sanctuary belongs to them and to anyone who suffers for the name. The left side belongs to the rest. Both groups, those seated on the right and those on the left, have the same gifts and the same promises. The only difference is that those sit on the right and have a certain honour.

Vis. 3.2.2

Translation

“You long to sit on the right with them, but your shortcomings are many. Yet you will be cleansed of your shortcomings. All who do not waver will also be cleansed of all their sins up to this day.”

Vis. 3.2.3

Greek source

ταῦτα εἴπασα ἤθελεν ἀπελθεῖν· πεσὼν δὲ αὐτῆς πρὸς τοὺς πόδας ἠρώτησα αὐτὴν κατὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἵνα μοι ἐπιδείξῃ ὃ ἐπηγγείλατο ὅραμα.

Translation

After saying this, she wanted to leave. I fell at her feet and begged her by the Lord to show me the vision she had promised.

Vis. 3.2.4

Greek source

ἡ δὲ πάλιν ἐπελάβετό μου τῆς χειρὸς καὶ ἐγείρει με καὶ καθίζει ἐπὶ τὸ συμψέλιον ἐξ εὐωνύμων· ἐκαθέζετο δὲ καὶ αὐτὴ ἐκ δεξιῶν. καὶ ἐπάρασα ῥάβδον τινὰ λαμπρὰν λέγει μοι· Βλέπεις μέγα πρᾶγμα; λέγω αὐτῇ· Κυρία, οὐδὲν βλέπω. λέγει μοι· Σύ, ἰδοὺ οὐχ ὁρᾷς κατέναντί σου πύργον μέγαν οἰκοδομούμενον ἐπὶ ὑδάτων λίθοις τετραγώνοις λαμπροῖς;

Translation

She took my hand again, raised me, and seated me on the left of the bench. She herself sat on the right. Raising a shining rod, she said to me, “Do you see something great?” I said, “Lady, I see nothing.” She said, “Look! Do you not see a great tower being built before you, on the waters, with shining square stones?”

Vis. 3.2.5

Translation

The tower was being built in a square by the six young men who had come with her. Countless other men brought stones, some from the depths and some from the land, and handed them to the six young men.

Vis. 3.2.6

Translation

They took the stones and built. All the stones drawn up from the depths were placed straight into the building. They were already shaped to fit, and their joints matched the other stones. They fitted so closely together that their joints were invisible.

Vis. 3.2.7

Translation

The tower looked as though it had been built from a single stone. Of the other stones brought from dry land, they discarded some and placed others in the building. Still others they broke up and threw far away from the tower.

Vis. 3.2.8

Translation

Many other stones lay around the tower, unused in the building. Some were rough and scabby, others had cracks, others were chipped, and others were white and round and did not fit into the building.

Vis. 3.2.9

Translation

I saw other stones being thrown far from the tower. They landed on the road but did not stay there, rolling off into trackless ground. Others fell into fire and burned. Others fell near the waters but could not roll into the water, although they wanted to roll into it and enter it.

Chapter 3

Vis. 3.3.1

Translation

After showing me these things, she wanted to hurry away. I said, “Lady, what good is it to have seen all this without knowing what it means?” She answered, “You are a crafty man, wanting to know about the tower.” “Yes, lady,” I said, “so that I can report it to the brothers and sisters. Then they may be more cheerful and, on hearing these things, know the Lord in great glory.”

Vis. 3.3.2

Translation

She said, “Many will hear. Some of them will rejoice when they hear, while others will weep. But if these too listen and repent, they too will rejoice. So listen to the meanings of the tower's images, for I will reveal everything to you. Stop troubling me about revelation. These revelations have a limit; they have reached their full measure. Yet you will not stop asking for revelations, because you are shameless.

Vis. 3.3.3

Greek source

ὁ μὲν πύργος, ὃν βλέπεις οἰκοδομούμενον, ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ Ἐκκλησία, ἡ ὀφθεῖσά σοι καὶ νῦν καὶ τὸ πρότερον· ὃ ἂν οὖν θελήσῃς ἐπερώτα περὶ τοῦ πύργου, καὶ ἀποκαλύψω σοι, ἵνα χαρῇς μετὰ τῶν ἁγίων.

Translation

“The tower you see being built is me, the Assembly, who appeared to you now and before. So ask whatever you wish about the tower, and I will reveal it to you, so that you may rejoice with the holy ones.”

Vis. 3.3.4

Translation

I said, “Lady, since you have once considered me worthy of having everything revealed to me, reveal it.” She said, “Whatever can be revealed to you will be revealed. Only let your heart be turned toward God, and do not doubt whatever you see.”

Vis. 3.3.5

Translation

I asked her, “Lady, why is the tower built on waters?” “I have told you before,” she said, “and you keep searching carefully. By searching, you find the truth. Listen, then, to why the tower is built on waters: because your life was saved through water and will be saved through it. The tower is founded on the word of the almighty and glorious name, and it is sustained by the Master's invisible power.”

Chapter 4

Vis. 3.4.1

Translation

I answered her, “Lady, this is great and wonderful. But who are the six young men building it?” “They are God's holy angels, the first to be created. The Lord entrusted his whole creation to them, to make it grow, to build it up, and to rule over all creation.

Vis. 3.4.2

Translation

“Through them the building of the tower will be completed.” “Who are the others bringing the stones?” “They too are God's holy angels, but these six are above them. The building of the tower will be completed, and all will rejoice together around the tower and praise God because its construction has been completed.”

Vis. 3.4.3

Translation

I asked, “Lady, I would like to know what happens to the stones and what they signify.” She answered, “It is not because you are more worthy than everyone else that this is revealed to you. Others are ahead of you and better than you, and these visions ought to have been revealed to them. But so that God's name may be glorified, they have been and will be revealed to you for the sake of those who waver, who wonder in their hearts whether these things are real or not. Tell them that all these things are true. Nothing lies outside the truth; everything is firm, certain, and securely founded.

Chapter 5

Vis. 3.5.1

Translation

“Now listen about the stones that go into the building. The square white stones whose joints fit together are the apostles, overseers, teachers, and deacons. They lived in accordance with God's holiness, and oversaw, taught, and served God's chosen ones with purity and reverence. Some have fallen asleep, while others are still alive. They always agreed with one another, lived at peace with one another, and listened to one another. That is why their joints fit together in the tower's building.”

Vis. 3.5.2

Translation

“Who are the stones drawn up from the depths, placed in the building, and fitting at the joints with the stones already built in?” “They are those who suffered for the name of the Lord.”

Vis. 3.5.3

Translation

“Lady, I want to know who the other stones brought from dry land are.” She said, “Those that go into the building without being cut are people whom the Lord has tested and approved, because they lived in the Lord's uprightness and carried out his commandments.”

Vis. 3.5.4

Greek source

Οἱ δὲ ἀγόμενοι καὶ τιθέμενοι εἰς τὴν οἰκοδομὴν τίνες εἰσίν; Νέοι εἰσὶν ἐν τῇ πίστει καὶ πιστοί. νουθετοῦνται δὲ ὑπὸ τῶν ἀγγέλων εἰς τὸ ἀγαθοποιεῖν, διότι οὐχ εὑρέθη ἐν αὐτοῖς πονηρία.

Translation

“Who are those brought and placed in the building?” “They are new in the faith and faithful. The angels admonish them to do good, because no wickedness was found in them.”

Vis. 3.5.5

Translation

“Who are those they discarded and threw aside?” “They are people who have sinned and want to repent. That is why they were not thrown far away from the tower: they will be useful for the building if they repent. Those who intend to repent will become strong in faith if they do repent—if they repent now, while the tower is being built. But once the building is completed, they no longer have a place; they will be cast out. All they will have is to lie beside the tower.

Chapter 6

Vis. 3.6.1

Translation

“Do you want to know about those that are broken up and thrown far from the tower? They are the children of lawlessness. They came to believe hypocritically, and none of their wickedness left them. That is why they have no salvation: their wickedness makes them useless for the building. They were broken up and thrown far away because of the Lord's anger, for they provoked him.

Vis. 3.6.2

Translation

“As for the many other stones you saw lying there, not going into the building: the rough, scabby ones are those who have known the truth but do not remain in it or stay close to the holy ones. That is why they are useless.”

Vis. 3.6.3

Translation

“Who are the ones with cracks?” “They are those who hold things against one another in their hearts and are not at peace among themselves. They put on a peaceful face, but once they part, their wicked feelings remain in their hearts.

Vis. 3.6.4

Translation

“These are the cracks the stones have. The chipped stones are people who have believed and are mostly righteous, but still have some share in lawlessness. That is why they are chipped rather than whole.”

Vis. 3.6.5

Translation

“Lady, who are the white round ones that do not fit into the building?” She answered, “How long will you remain foolish and without understanding, asking about everything and grasping nothing? They are people who have faith but also possess wealth [of this present age]. [But] when distress comes, they deny their Lord because of their wealth and business dealings.”

Vis. 3.6.6

Translation

I answered her, “Lady, when will they become useful for the building?” “When the wealth that lures them is cut away,” she said, “then they will become useful to God. Just as a round stone cannot become square unless it is cut and loses some of its substance, so those who are wealthy in this age cannot become useful to the Lord unless their wealth is cut away.

Vis. 3.6.7

Greek source

ἀπὸ σεαυτοῦ πρῶτον γνῶθι· ὅτε ἐπλούτεις ἄχρηστος ἦς, νῦν δὲ εὔχρηστος εἶ καὶ ὠφέλιμος τῇ ζωῇ. εὔχρηστοι γίνεσθε τῷ θεῷ· καὶ γὰρ σὺ αὐτὸς χρᾶσαι ἐκ τῶν αὐτῶν λίθων.

Translation

“First learn from your own experience. When you were rich you were useless, but now you are useful and of service to life. Become useful to God, for you yourself also use the same stones.”

Chapter 7

Vis. 3.7.1

Translation

“The other stones you saw thrown far from the tower, falling onto the road and rolling off into trackless places, are people who have believed but abandon their true path because they waver. Thinking they can find a better path, they wander astray and suffer as they walk through trackless places.

Vis. 3.7.2

Translation

“Those that fall into the fire and burn are people who have finally deserted the living God. Repentance no longer enters their hearts, because of their desires for debauchery and the wicked deeds they have done.

Vis. 3.7.3

Translation

“Do you want to know who the others are, those that fall near the waters but cannot roll into the water? They are people who have heard the word and want to be baptized into the name of the Lord. Then, when they remember the purity that the truth requires, they change their minds and go back to pursuing their wicked desires.”

Vis. 3.7.4

Greek source

ἐτέλεσεν οὖν τὴν ἐξήγησιν τοῦ πύργου.

Translation

She had now finished explaining the tower.

Vis. 3.7.5

Translation

Still pressing her shamelessly, I asked whether all these discarded stones that did not fit into the tower's building could repent and have a place in this tower. “They can repent,” she said, “but they cannot fit into this tower.

Vis. 3.7.6

Translation

“They will fit into another, much lesser place, once they have been tormented and completed the days of their sins. They will be moved because they shared in the righteous word. Then it will be their lot to be moved out of the torments they suffer because of the wicked deeds they did. But if repentance does not enter their hearts, they are not saved, because of their hardness of heart.”

Chapter 8

Vis. 3.8.1

Greek source

Ὅτε οὖν ἐπαυσάμην ἐρωτῶν αὐτὴν περὶ πάντων τούτων, λέγει μοι· Θέλεις ἄλλο ἰδεῖν; κατεπίθυμος ὢν τοῦ θεάσασθαι περιχαρὴς ἐγενόμην τοῦ ἰδεῖν.

Translation

When I had finished asking about all this, she said to me, “Do you want to see something else?” I longed to look and was overjoyed at the prospect.

Vis. 3.8.2

Greek source

ἐμβλέψασά μοι ὑπεμειδίασεν καὶ λέγει μοι· Βλέπεις ἑπτὰ γυναῖκας κύκλῳ τοῦ πύργου; Βλέπω, φημί, κυρία. Ὁ πύργος οὗτος ὑπὸ τούτων βαστάζεται κατ’ ἐπιταγὴν τοῦ κυρίου.

Translation

She looked at me, smiled slightly, and said, “Do you see seven women around the tower?” “I do, lady,” I said. “This tower is supported by them at the Lord's command.

Vis. 3.8.3

Greek source

ἄκουε νῦν τὰς ἐνεργείας αὐτῶν. ἡ μὲν πρώτη αὐτῶν, ἡ κρατοῦσα τὰς χεῖρας, Πίστις καλεῖται· διὰ ταύτης σώζονται οἱ ἐκλεκτοὶ τοῦ θεοῦ.

Translation

“Now listen to what they do. The first, the one holding hands, is called Faith. Through her God's chosen ones are saved.

Vis. 3.8.4

Translation

“The next, who has her belt fastened and bears herself courageously, is called Self-control. She is Faith's daughter. Whoever follows her is blessed in life, because they will abstain from all wicked deeds, believing that if they abstain from every wicked desire they will inherit eternal life.”

Vis. 3.8.5

Translation

“Lady, who are the others?” “They are daughters of one another. Their names are Simplicity, Knowledge, Innocence, Reverence, and Love. When you do all the deeds of their mother, you can live.”

Vis. 3.8.6

Greek source

Ἤθελον, φημί, γνῶναι, κυρία, τίς τίνα δύναμιν ἔχει αὐτῶν.

Translation

“Lady,” I said, “I would like to know what power each of them has.”

Vis. 3.8.7

Translation

“Listen to their powers,” she said. “Their powers depend on one another, and they follow one another in the order of their birth. From Faith comes Self-control; from Self-control, Simplicity; from Simplicity, Innocence; from Innocence, Reverence; from Reverence, Knowledge; and from Knowledge, Love. Their deeds are pure, reverent, and divine.

Vis. 3.8.8

Greek source

ὃς ἂν οὖν δουλεύσῃ ταύταις καὶ ἰσχύσῃ κρατῆσαι τῶν ἔργων αὐτῶν, ἐν τῷ πύργῳ ἕξει τὴν κατοίκησιν μετὰ τῶν ἁγίων τοῦ θεοῦ.

Translation

“Whoever serves these women and is able to hold fast to their deeds will have a home in the tower with God's holy ones.”

Vis. 3.8.9

Translation

I asked her about the times, whether the end had already come. She cried out loudly, “You foolish man, do you not see that the tower is still being built? When its building is completed, the end has come. But it will soon be finished. Ask me nothing more. This reminder is enough for you and for the holy ones, and so is the renewal of your spirits.

Vis. 3.8.10

Greek source

ἀλλ’ οὐ σοὶ μόνῳ ἀπεκαλύφθη, ἀλλ’ ἵνα πᾶσιν δηλώσεις αὐτά.

Translation

“This was not revealed to you alone, but so that you might make it known to everyone.

Vis. 3.8.11

Translation

“After three days, for you must understand it first. But first, Hermas, I command you to speak all the words I am about to tell you into the ears of the holy ones, so that by hearing and doing them they may be cleansed of their wickedness, and you with them.

Chapter 9

Vis. 3.9.1

Translation

“Listen to me, children. I raised you in great simplicity, innocence, and reverence through the mercy of the Lord, who let righteousness rain upon you, so that you might be made righteous and holy, freed from all wickedness and all crookedness. Yet you refuse to leave your wickedness behind.

Vis. 3.9.2

Greek source

νῦν οὖν ἀκούσατέ μου καὶ εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐπισκέπτεσθε ἀλλήλους καὶ ἀντιλαμβάνεσθε ἀλλήλων, καὶ μὴ μόνοι τὰ κτίσματα τοῦ θεοῦ μεταλαμβάνετε ἐκ καταχύματος, ἀλλὰ μεταδίδοτε καὶ τοῖς ὑστερουμένοις.

Translation

“So listen to me now. Be at peace among yourselves, look after one another, and help one another. Do not keep God's creations to yourselves and consume them in abundance; share them with those who lack them.

Vis. 3.9.3

Translation

“For some bring sickness upon their flesh by eating too much and damage their flesh. Others have no food, and their flesh is damaged because they do not have enough nourishment; their bodies waste away.

Vis. 3.9.4

Greek source

αὕτη οὖν ἡ ἀσυνκρασία βλαβερὰ ὑμῖν τοῖς ἔχουσι καὶ μὴ μεταδιδοῦσιν τοῖς ὑστερουμένοις.

Translation

“This imbalance is therefore harmful to you who have plenty but do not share with those in need.

Vis. 3.9.5

Greek source

βλέπετε τὴν κρίσιν τὴν ἐπερχομένην. οἱ ὑπερέχοντες οὖν ἐκζητεῖτε τοὺς πεινῶντας ἕως οὔπω ὁ πύργος ἐτελέσθη· μετὰ γὰρ τὸ τελεσθῆναι τὸν πύργον θελήσετε ἀγαθοποιεῖν, καὶ οὐχ ἕξετε τόπον.

Translation

“Beware of the judgement that is coming. You who have more, seek out the hungry while the tower is still unfinished. After it is completed, you will want to do good but will have no opportunity.

Vis. 3.9.6

Greek source

βλέπετε οὖν ὑμεῖς οἱ γαυρούμενοι ἐν τῷ πλούτῳ ὑμῶν, μήποτε στενάξουσιν οἱ ὑστερούμενοι, καὶ ὁ στεναγμὸς αὐτῶν ἀναβήσεται πρὸς τὸν κύριον, καὶ ἐκκλεισθήσεσθε μετὰ τῶν ἀγαθῶν ὑμῶν ἔξω τῆς θύρας τοῦ πύργου.

Translation

“So beware, you who boast of your wealth: those in need may groan, and their groaning will rise to the Lord. Then you will be shut out, along with your possessions, beyond the tower's door.

Vis. 3.9.7

Translation

“Now I speak to you who lead the assembly and occupy the foremost seats. Do not become like poisoners. Poisoners carry their poisons in boxes, but you carry your poison and venom in your hearts.

Vis. 3.9.8

Greek source

ἐνεσκιρωμένοι ἐστὲ καὶ οὐ θέλετε καθαρίσαι τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν καὶ συνκεράσαι ὑμῶν τὴν φρόνησιν ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ ἐν καθαρᾷ καρδίᾳ, ἵνα σχῆτε ἔλεος παρὰ τοῦ βασιλέως τοῦ μεγάλου.

Translation

“You have hardened yourselves. You refuse to cleanse your hearts and bring your understanding together in a pure heart, so that you may receive mercy from the great King.

Vis. 3.9.9

Greek source

βλέπετε οὖν, τέκνα, μήποτε αὗται αἱ διχοστασίαι ὑμῶν ἀποστερήσουσιν τὴν ζωὴν ὑμῶν.

Translation

“So beware, children, lest these divisions of yours deprive you of your life.

Vis. 3.9.10

Translation

“How can you want to train the Lord's chosen ones when you yourselves lack discipline? Train one another, then, and be at peace among yourselves, so that I too may stand cheerfully before the Father and give your Lord an account on behalf of you all.”

Chapter 10

Vis. 3.10.1

Translation

When she had finished speaking with me, the six young men who were building came and carried her to the tower. Four others lifted the bench and carried it to the tower too. I did not see their faces, because they were turned away.

Vis. 3.10.2

Greek source

ὑπάγουσαν δὲ αὐτὴν ἠρώτων ἵνα μοι ἀποκαλύψῃ περὶ τῶν τριῶν μορφῶν ἐν αἷς μοι ἐνεφανίσθη. ἀποκριθεῖσά μοι λέγει· Περὶ τούτων ἕτερον δεῖ σε ἐπερωτῆσαι ἵνα σοι ἀπο- καλυφθῇ.

Translation

As she was leaving, I asked her to explain the three forms in which she had appeared to me. She answered, “You must ask someone else about these things, so that they may be revealed to you.”

Vis. 3.10.3

Greek source

ὤφθη δέ μοι, ἀδελφοί, τῇ μὲν πρώτῃ ὁράσει τῇ περυσινῇ λίαν πρεσβυτέρα καὶ ἐν καθέδρᾳ καθημένη.

Translation

Brothers and sisters, in my first vision the year before, she had appeared to me as a very elderly woman sitting on a seat.

Vis. 3.10.4

Greek source

τῇ δὲ ἑτέρᾳ ὁράσει τὴν μὲν ὄψιν νεωτέραν εἶχεν, τὴν δὲ σάρκα καὶ τὰς τρίχας πρεσβυτέρας, καὶ ἑστηκυῖά μοι ἐλάλει.

Translation

In the second vision her face looked younger, but her flesh and hair were those of an elderly woman. She stood as she spoke to me.

Vis. 3.10.5

Greek source

ἱλαρωτέρα δὲ ἦν ἢ τὸ πρότερον. τῇ δὲ τρίτῃ ὁράσει ὅλη νεωτέρα καὶ κάλλει ἐκπρεπεστάτη, μόνας δὲ τὰς τρίχας πρεσβυτέρας εἶχεν· ἱλαρὰ δὲ εἰς τέλος ἦν καὶ ἐπὶ συμψελίου καθημένη.

Translation

She was more cheerful than before. In the third vision she was younger all over and exceptionally beautiful; only her hair was still that of an elderly woman. She was entirely cheerful and sat on a bench.

Vis. 3.10.6

Greek source

περὶ τούτων περίλυπος ἤμην λίαν τοῦ γνῶναί με τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν ταύτην. καὶ βλέπω τὴν πρεσβυτέραν ἐν ὁράματι τῆς νυκτὸς λέγουσάν μοι· Πᾶσα ἐρώτησις ταπεινοφροσύνης χρῄζει· νήστευσον οὖν, καὶ λήμψῃ ὃ αἰτεῖς παρὰ τοῦ κυρίου.

Translation

I was deeply troubled by my desire to understand this revelation. In a vision at night I saw the elderly woman saying to me, “Every request requires humility. Fast, then, and you will receive what you ask from the Lord.”

Vis. 3.10.7

Greek source

ἐνήστευσα οὖν μίαν ἡμέραν, καὶ αὐτῇ τῇ νυκτί μοι ὤφθη νεανίσκος καὶ λέγει μοι· Τί σὺ ὑπὸ χεῖρα αἰτεῖς ἀποκαλύψεις ἐν δεήσει;

Translation

So I fasted for one day. That very night a young man appeared to me and said, “Why do you keep asking for revelations in your prayers?

Vis. 3.10.8

Greek source

βλέπε μήποτε πολλὰ αἰτούμενος βλάψῃς σου τὴν σάρκα. ἀρκοῦσίν σοι αἱ ἀποκαλύψεις αὗται. μήτι δύνῃ ἰσχυροτέρας ἀποκαλύψεις ὧν ἑώρακας ἰδεῖν;

Translation

“Take care that you do not harm your flesh by asking for too much. These revelations are enough for you. Can you really bear to see revelations more powerful than those you have seen?”

Vis. 3.10.9

Translation

I answered him, “Sir, I ask only this: an explanation of the elderly woman's three forms, so that the revelation may be complete.” He answered, “How long will you remain without understanding? Your wavering makes you unable to understand, and so does your failure to turn your heart toward the Lord.”

Vis. 3.10.10

Greek source

ἀποκριθεὶς αὐτῷ πάλιν εἶπον· Ἀλλ’ ἀπὸ σοῦ, κύριε, ἀκριβέστερον αὐτὰ γνωσόμεθα.

Translation

I answered him again, “But from you, sir, we will learn about them more precisely.”

Chapter 11

Vis. 3.11.1–2

Translation

“Listen,” he said, “about the forms you are asking about. Why did she appear to you in the first vision as an elderly woman sitting on a seat? Because your spirit was old, already withered and without strength, owing to your weakness and wavering.

Vis. 3.11.3

Translation

“For just as elderly people who no longer hope to become young again expect nothing but their final sleep, so you too, weakened by worldly affairs, surrendered yourselves to apathy and did not cast your cares upon the Lord.

Vis. 3.11.4

Translation

“Instead, your understanding was shattered, and you grew old in your grief.” “Sir, I would like to know why she sat on a seat.” “Because everyone who is weak sits on a seat on account of their weakness, so that the weakness of their body may be supported. You have the meaning of the first vision.

Chapter 12

Vis. 3.12.1

Greek source

Τῇ δὲ δευτέρᾳ ὁράσει εἶδες αὐτὴν ἑστηκυῖαν καὶ τὴν ὄψιν νεωτέραν ἔχουσαν καὶ ἱλαρωτέραν παρὰ τὸ πρότερον, τὴν δὲ σάρκα καὶ τὰς τρίχας πρεσβυτέρας.

Translation

“In the second vision you saw her standing. Her face was younger and more cheerful than before, but her flesh and hair were those of an elderly woman.

Vis. 3.12.2

Translation

“Listen to this image too,” he said. “An elderly person who has already given up hope because of weakness and poverty expects nothing but the last day of life. Then suddenly an inheritance is left to them. Hearing about it, they rise up, overjoyed, and put on strength. They no longer lie down but stand. Their spirit, already worn out by their earlier dealings, is renewed. They no longer sit but take courage. So it is with you too, on hearing the revelation

Vis. 3.12.3

Translation

“that the Lord revealed to you: he had compassion on you and renewed your spirits. You put aside your weakness, strength came to you, and you became powerful in faith. When the Lord saw you growing strong, he rejoiced. That is why he showed you the building of the tower. He will show you other things if, with all your heart, you live at peace among yourselves.

Chapter 13

Vis. 3.13.1

Greek source

Τῇ δὲ τρίτῃ ὁράσει εἶδες αὐτὴν νεωτέραν καὶ καλὴν καὶ ἱλαρὰν καὶ καλὴν τὴν μορφὴν αὐτῆς·

Translation

“In the third vision you saw her young, beautiful, cheerful, and lovely in form.

Vis. 3.13.2

Translation

“For when someone who is grieving receives good news, they immediately forget their earlier sorrows and look for nothing but the news they have heard. From then on, they grow strong for what is good, and their spirit is renewed by the joy they have received. So you too have received a renewal of your spirits by seeing these good things.

Vis. 3.13.3

Greek source

καὶ ὅτι ἐπὶ συμψελίου εἶδες καθημένην, ἰσχυρὰ ἡ θέσις· ὅτι τέσσαρας πόδας ἔχει τὸ συμψέλιον καὶ ἰσχυρῶς ἕστηκεν· καὶ γὰρ ὁ κόσμος διὰ τεσσάρων στοιχείων κρατεῖται.

Translation

“As for your seeing her seated on a bench: her position is secure, because the bench has four legs and stands firmly. The world itself is sustained by four elements.

Vis. 3.13.4

Greek source

οἱ οὖν μετανοήσαντες ὁλοτελῶς νέοι ἔσονται καὶ τεθεμελιωμένοι, οἱ ἐξ ὅλης καρδίας μετανοήσαντες. ἀπέχεις ὁλοτελῆ τὴν ἀποκάλυψιν· μηκέτι μηδὲν αἰτήσεις περὶ ἀποκαλύψεως· ἐάν τι δὲ δέῃ, ἀποκαλυφθήσεταί σοι.

Translation

“So those who have repented will be entirely young and firmly established—those who have repented with all their heart. You now have the revelation in full. Ask nothing more about revelation. But if anything is needed, it will be revealed to you.”

Reader’s notes

  1. 1. 3.1.1ad2; 3.11.1ad2

These are combined source records. Their IDs have not been split or renumbered. The opening of 3.1.1ad2 is elliptical; “the vision” is understood from its heading and relative clause.

  2. 2. 3.1.1ad2

χονδρίζεις is rendered “grind grain.” The lexical reading, and what activity Hermas is being directed to, remains open; “where you live” is not substituted merely because it occurs in an older translation. The supplied [ἐκείνης] is marked in English.

  3. 3. 3.1.4

The bench has a linen cushion and a fine cloth. The precise fabric associated with καρπάσινον is not securely settled here; “fine linen cloth” remains provisional.

  4. 4. 3.1.9–3.2.2

Suffering “for the name” is not expanded into a particular historical persecution. Those on the right and left receive the same gifts and promises, while the right-hand group has an additional honour.

  5. 5. 3.4.3

“What happens to the stones” is a provisional rendering of τῶν λίθων τὴν ἔξοδον; “what they signify” renders the question about their δύναμις. The exact sense of ἔξοδος remains open.

  6. 6. 3.5.1

“Overseers” and “deacons” name the roles represented by ἐπίσκοποι and διάκονοι. This translation does not assign them a later denomination's institutional structure. “Fallen asleep” is the text's image for death.

  7. 7. 3.6.5

Two supplied spans are marked: [of this present age] and [But]. Their classification cannot be inferred from the tag alone.

  8. 8. 3.6.7

The final reference to Hermas himself using “the same stones” is retained although its application is obscure; a new explanation of his employment or building activity is not added.

  9. 9. 3.7.3

Here μετανοοῦσιν means changing their minds about baptism, not the favourable repentance urged elsewhere. The context determines the English equivalent.

  10. 10. 3.7.5–6

The passage distinguishes repentance from admission to this tower. A lesser place and torments remain in the translation. In the last part, “because of the wicked deeds they did” is attached to the torments; the Greek's compressed causal syntax remains open. No later doctrine of a specific place of purification has been inserted.

  11. 11. 3.8.3

“Holding hands” leaves open whose hands Faith holds; the Greek does not explicitly name an object beyond “the hands.”

  12. 12. 3.8.5–7

The names are personified women and successive daughters. The order of names in 3.8.5 differs from the order of descent in 3.8.7. Both are preserved, without rearranging either list.

  13. 13. 3.8.10–11

“After three days” is an elliptical continuation of the instruction to make the revelation known. The omission of a repeated verb is retained; no additional episode is supplied.

  14. 14. 3.9.1

The source again has παῆναι. “Leave your wickedness behind” is a contextual rendering, not a normalization of the Greek spelling.

  15. 15. 3.9.7–8

φαρμακοί is rendered “poisoners” in the extended image of poison, boxes, and venom. Possible associations with harmful magic are not inserted into the speech. The leaders' hardened state is preserved as an image, not diagnosed psychologically.

  16. 16. 3.10.2

Master transmits ἀπο- καλυφθῇ. For translation, this is read as a word split by a line-end hyphen, corresponding to “be revealed.” The source master has not been edited. This joining is explicitly recorded here.

  17. 17. 3.10.7

“Keep asking” is a contextual rendering of the idiomatic ὑπὸ χεῖρα with asking; in 5.5 the same expression is rendered “regularly” with reading.

  18. 18. 3.11–13

The speaker moves from addressing Hermas to plural “you,” applying the woman's forms to the community. The final explanation of the bench retains the ancient image of four elements supporting the world.
