Chapter 1

Man. 6.1.1

Translation

“In the first commandment,” he said, “I commanded you to keep faith, fear, and self-control.” “Yes, sir,” I said. “But now,” he said, “I also want to explain their powers, so that you understand what power and activity each has. Their workings are twofold, relating to what is righteous and what is unrighteous.

Man. 6.1.2

Translation

“So trust what is righteous, but do not trust what is unrighteous. What is righteous has a straight path, while what is unrighteous has a crooked one. Walk the straight, level path, and leave the crooked one.

Man. 6.1.3

Translation

“For the crooked path has no proper tracks, only trackless places and many stumbling blocks. It is rough and thorny.

Man. 6.1.4

Translation

“It therefore harms those who walk on it. But those who travel the straight path walk smoothly and without stumbling, because it is neither rough nor thorny.

Man. 6.1.5

Translation

“So you see that it is more beneficial to follow this path.” “Sir,” I said, “I would be glad to follow it.” “You will,” he said, “and everyone who turns toward the Lord with all their heart will follow it.

Chapter 2

Man. 6.2.1

Translation

“Now listen about faith,” he said. “Two angels are with a person: one of righteousness and one of wickedness.”

Man. 6.2.2

Greek source

Πῶς οὖν, φημί, κύριε, γνώσομαι τὰς αὐτῶν ἐνεργείας, ὅτι ἀμφότεροι ἄγγελοι μετ’ ἐμοῦ κατοικοῦσιν;

Translation

“How, then, sir,” I said, “will I recognize what they do, since both angels dwell with me?”

Man. 6.2.3

Translation

“Listen,” he said, “and you will understand their workings. The angel of righteousness is tender, modest, gentle, and quiet. When he enters your heart, he immediately speaks with you about righteousness, purity, reverence, contentment, every righteous deed, and every glorious virtue. When all these things arise in your heart, know that the angel of righteousness is with you. These are the deeds of the angel of righteousness. Trust him, then, and his deeds.

Man. 6.2.4

Translation

“Now consider the deeds of the angel of wickedness too. First of all, he is quick-tempered, bitter, and senseless. His deeds are wicked and overthrow God's servants. When he enters your heart, recognize him by his deeds.”

Man. 6.2.5

Translation

“Sir,” I said, “I do not know how to recognize him.” “Listen,” he said. “When a quick temper or bitterness comes upon you, know that he is in you. Then come a desire for many undertakings, extravagant indulgence in abundant food, drink and repeated drunken excesses, all kinds of unnecessary luxuries, desires for women, greed, great pride, and boastfulness, and everything resembling these things. When these things arise in your heart, know that the angel of wickedness is in you.

Man. 6.2.6

Translation

“So once you recognize his deeds, leave him and put no trust in him, because his deeds are wicked and of no benefit to God's servants. You now have the workings of both angels.

Man. 6.2.7

Translation

“Understand them and trust the angel of righteousness. Keep away from the angel of wickedness, because his teaching is wicked in every deed. For even if a man is very faithful, if this angel's thought arises in his heart, that man—or woman—must commit some sin.

Man. 6.2.8

Translation

“On the other hand, even if a man or woman is very wicked, if the deeds of the angel of righteousness arise in their heart, they must inevitably do some good.

Man. 6.2.9

Translation

“So you see,” he said, “that it is good to follow the angel of righteousness and renounce the angel of wickedness.

Man. 6.2.10

Translation

“This commandment explains what concerns faith, so that you may trust the deeds of the angel of righteousness and, by doing them, live for God. But believe that the deeds of the angel of wickedness are grievous. By not doing them, you will live for God.”

Reader’s notes

  1. 1. 6.2.3–8

Αὐτάρκεια is “contentment” here. The description of the two angels retains the stated necessities: one “must” commit some sin under the wicked angel's influence, and one “must” do some good under the righteous angel's influence. These modal statements are not weakened to mere possibilities.
